Phylogeny and origin of the domestic dog

The domestic dog (Canis familiaris) is the most phenotypically diverse mammal species known and ranges in size and conformation from the diminutive Chihuahua to the gargantuan Great Dane. The difference in size and conformation among dog breeds exceeds that among species in the dog family Canidae (Wayne, 1986a,b; see Chapter 3).
