Special red cake made for tiger cubs' birthday

Hogle Zoo's two Siberian tiger cubs — still a favorite attraction among visitors — celebrated their first birthday Monday with guests, a birthday card and treats.

Human visitors enjoyed cake and ice cream, but the tigers, Basha and Strannik, got their own type of special "cake." According to Stacey Phillips, Hogle Zoo's marketing manager, this treat is a frozen mixture of meat and blood.
"It's real popular among tigers," she said.
The tiger cubs were born Feb. 16, 2003, and weighed approximately 3 pounds each. A year later the male cub, Strannik ("straw-nick"), weighs 212 pounds and the female, Basha ("bah-sha"), weighs 143.5 pounds. The cubs are the first Amur (Siberian) tiger cubs born at Hogle Zoo in more than 20 years. Only an estimated 350-400 Amur tigers still live in the wild, in Russia and China. Their numbers have been cut through loss of habitat and illegal hunting. Male tigers can eventually weigh about 500 pounds, so Strannik is well on his way to adult status.
The playful cubs still live with their mother, 8-year-old Tiksi ("Tick-see"). She came to Hogle Zoo in March 2000 from the Toronto Zoo. The mother and cubs are only separated from one another at feeding time.
Phillips said the cubs will remain at Hogle Zoo about one more year. They will then be shipped off to another zoo in need of large felines, as part of the Tiger Species Survival Plan. Tigers in zoos can live to about 20 to 25 years and so the cubs are about 3 to 4 years old in tiger years.
Father of the cubs is L.C. (short for Little Chu-Chu) who came to Hogle Zoo in August of 2001 from the Henry Doorly Zoo, Omaha, Neb.
The two cubs were part of a threesome early last year. However, the other male tiger cub died unexpectedly from natural causes last May at about three months of age. That cub faced challenges from the beginning because he was born with a fetal abnormality that affected his right eye.

Phillips said winter is a great uncrowded time to visit the zoo, especially during temperature inversions, when it is a little warmer on the hillside by Emigration Canyon.

Hogle Zoo, 2600 E. Sunnyside Ave., is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the grounds open until 5 p.m. for those already inside the gate. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12 and seniors. Children 2 and under are free.
